The following are 6 steps to help you understand a Sculpture Commission. This is needed when you want to purchase a sculpture for your home, office or corporate grounds and have not been successful in finding an already produced piece, or in the case of interior designers who have an entire building to decorate. You must then look for a Sculptor to accomplish this for you.
1. Research. Find a Sculptor that creates what you are looking for. Something for you to consider is, if a Sculptor makes a comfortable living with sculpting being his only source of income, that is a great indicator he or she is good at what they do. Contact a few, not just one. A conversation on the phone or in person can go a long way to help you quickly determine the Sculptor that will create what you want.
2. Decide from these conversations which Sculptor can help you. Have him or her show you images of past sculptures and choose the one that comes closest to what you are looking for. The subject, pose, size, color, theme and other attributes make the sculpture you want commissioned unique to you as your very own creation.
3. If you are confident the Sculptor has a precise understanding of what the sculpture is to look like, an agreement is signed and a deposit is made. An experienced Sculptor will have an agreement that he uses for his commissioned sculptures. Read it carefully and have a good understanding of every statement before signing. Do not be afraid to request changes that are important to you. In most cases the Deposit amount is 50%, Non-Refundable. This is where the “Leap of Faith” happens for most clients.
4. Once the deposit is made, allow the Sculptor a considerable amount of lead time to complete the commissioned piece. In other words, be patient. Agree ahead of time how the Sculptor will keep you informed of the sculpture’s progress, and how he will communicate with you for updates on your sculpture. There should be a point in time when you will still be able to make a change and a point where there can be no further changes. You and the Sculptor must be clear on this from the beginning. The anticipation and excitement during this time makes the end result all the sweeter.
5. The sculpture is now finished and it is everything you thought it would be. You will be required to make the final payment at this point in order for the sculpture to be released or shipped.
6. Other charges such as shipping and taxes are in addition to the cost of the sculpture. Monument size sculptures need special construction to be mounted outdoors so the cost of set up is also in addition to the cost of the sculpture, shipping and possible taxes.
You may tend to be more comfortable purchasing sculptures you can touch and examine at close range, however, the satisfaction of commissioning art specifically designed to grasp the feeling, aura, image or design of your company or your unique and individual style, is an exciting and rewarding process for everyone involved.
